Check Into New Hotels for the New Year!

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

When it comes to hotels, I am loyal to one thing: a great experience. I see each trip I take as an opportunity to stay somewhere new because I believe the hotel you choose directly impacts your overall experience.

What you choose for a romantic weekend should be very different from the hotel you would choose on a business trip or when traveling with small children.

2011 will welcome a nice selection of new hotels around the world. Each with its own uniqueness and most with an eye on environmental sustainability and service.

Here is a quick sampling of new U.S. hotels that have just opened or are set to open in the coming months.

1. The Pearl NYC

Debut:  Opened November 2010; Grand Opening TBD

This perfectly located New York City boutique property is open but is still putting the finishing touches on what I think is one of the best new boutique hotels for the new year. The standard rooms combine modern design and amenities with spaciousness that is hard to find in NYC.  Complimentary continental breakfast and evening wine and cheese receptions just add to the warmth and service that will keep even someone like me coming back again and again.

2. The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas

Debut: December 15, 2010

This 52 story hotel on the Vegas Strip offers a balcony view from nearly every room. The décor is urban sophisticated and the rest of this posh new Vegas hotel is inviting. Boasting 12 restaurants from sushi to bustling food hall, three pools, a spa, casino, nightclub, and shops, add this to your list for must-stay hotels.

3. Viceroy L’Ermitage Beverly Hills,

Debut: Early 2011

This five-star, five-diamond resort will definitely keep its luxury reputation after coming under Viceroy ownership. The newly refurbished hotel not only has a prime location but stunning views from the roof-top pool.  You’ll feel like a celebrity with the attentiveness of the staff at this posh Beverly Hills hotel.

4. Doubletree Napa Valley – American Canyon Hotel & Spa

Debut: February 2011

Doubletree recently purchased Napa Valley’s first environmentally sustainable hotel & spa from Gaia and is updating the property’s look while maintaining its commitment to Mother Earth. The hotel is affordable and reasonably close to nearby wineries (about 6 miles)

5. Four Seasons Resort Vail

Debut: December 2010

Ski some of the best powder in the world while staying at one of the finest new resorts, The Four Seasons Resort in Vail, CO.  Not only is it luxurious, it is family-friendly.  And when I’m on a ski vacation that is often top of my list. No need is left unmet for guests young or old.  Look for great deals during the summer when hiking, biking and relaxation take hold!

Don’t Forget to Reward Yourself!

All this talk about new hotels leads me to an important tip. Sign up for the welcomerewards program. It’s a pleasure to book rooms with because regardless of what city I am in or what type of hotel I choose, each stay counts toward me earning a free night. Here’s how it works: for every 10 nights you book with, regardless of the hotel, you earn a free night.  It’s just that simple.  Redemption is easy and free from black-out dates typical of most brand-specific programs.

With consumers and business travelers looking for the best deals possible this fall, their best bet is to research what is offered in conjunction with guest-recognition programs. Since brand loyalty is so critical to hotels, many properties have created enticements to join free rewards programs that offer hotel stays and other various benefits in hopes of building a long-term relationship with the traveler.

Here are a few tips on how to find great discounts and get the most out of loyalty programs:

1. Pool Your Points into a small number of rewards programs to maximize the benefits.

2. Keep track of your membership email/membership number, you’ll need it each time you make reservations and some programs now track by email address.

3. The monthly statement and membership site is your best friend for perks – Check frequently in order to quickly find which rewards you may be eligible for.

4. Rewards and promotions may be posted on the Twitter and Facebook accounts of your favorite sites and properties. Look for exclusive deals.

5. Business travelers should look to accumulate points at hotels close to where they often conduct business.

6. Look for loyalty programs that don’t tie you down to a specific hotel chain. This maximizes your flexibility.

7. Carefully examine how long it takes you to get a free stay. This can vary substantially by program.

In addition to these tips, another way to take advantage of great offers can be found at where recently launched its welcomerewards® Challenge. Along with the free night you earn for every 10 nights you complete through, Challenge takers can get free bonus nights at their 15th and 30th nights. That is five free nights!  In addition, is giving away two free FLIP Ultra™ Camcorders every day between now and December 31st.

How To Get a Little Luxury for Less

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

My mom always told me that I had “champagne taste on a beer budget.” Nice! But there is some truth to that. And when it comes to travel, we should all be looking for the best bang for our buck. So how can you stay in great hotels and resorts and still have some $$ for eating and sightseeing? Checkout some of these tips:

Book early for best availability, rooms and rates.  Last year, you could get a good last minute deal but people are traveling again, the economy is slowly recovering, and to get the great deals you need to plan and book ahead.

  • Reward yourself. Sign up for the WelcomeRewards program. It’s simple and easy, and FREE to join. When you book any 10 nights, you earn a free night stay at more than 64,000 hotels worldwide. I’ve already earned and used free nights and have another WelcomeReward night reservation in Italy in the Fall. It’s a great way to experience a variety of hotels with the benefits of a true loyalty program.

Ask For What You Want! Don’t hesitate to ask the front desk personnel upon check-in if there’s an upgrade available. Many hotels are glad to move guests into a “better” room. It builds customer loyalty and it helps them to sell that more affordable standard room to someone else.

Be Flexible. Hotels in resort areas popular to leisure travelers are often cheapest during the week.  So travel Sunday-Thursday for lower prices.

Frequent Flyer Miles. Use the frequent flyer miles you have been stockpiling for an upgrade! You can farewatch for the ticket prices and still ride in style.

Make friends with the Concierge. The hotel Concierge is literally your ticket to what’s hot in a given town.  The concierge often has discounts to local restaurants, shows, clubs and events. They can get restaurant reservations when no one else can.  And they want to help you, so let them!

Ready to plan that getaway? Travelers, like me, who like to stay in style at four and five star hotels can find deals starting at $96 a night with’s Luxury for Less sale.  Find deals such as the five-star Ritz-Carlton Chicago from $250 per night for a three night stay with the third night free, while The Royal Sonesta Hotel Boston, a four star hotel, starts at $135 a night. Luxury deals of 40% off can be found at Rooney’s Boutique Hotel in Buenos Aires with rooms from $116 per night while the five star Venetian Resort Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas is offering $150 in resort credits.

See for restrictions.
